Allergic Conjunctivitis

About Allergic Conjunctivitis

Conjunctiva is a thin outer most layer of an eye which consists, inner part of both upper and lower eyelids. Allergic Conjunctivitis is the hypersensitivity reaction of this layer due to substances such as pollens, grass, animal fur (dandruff), house dust mite etc. It may also involve cornea. It commonly affects children and young adults between 4 – 20 years old although people of all ages can be affected. It may be associated with hay fever (allergic rhinitis).

Symptoms
  • Itching and burning sensation or foreign body sensation.
  • Tearing
  • Photophobia (fear of light)
Signs
  • Redness of eyes, in chronic type conjunctiva is straw coloured,
  • Bulging of the conjunctiva,
  • Swelling of eye lids
  • Thin mucoid discharge.
  • Small whitish pimples along the junction of cornea and conjunctiva.
Treatment
  • Identify and eliminate or avoid related substances
  • Cold compression
  • Visit Eye Doctor (DO NOT buy medicines over the counter without eye doctor’s advice). The Doctor will prescribe proper medicines, counsel and advice you accordingly.

What will happen if not treated?
Eyes may be severely affected leading to loss of vision.
Remember
Improper use of some medicines for a long period e.g. steroids worsens the condition of eyes.
