Vision Centres

Moving Towards Inclusive Eye Care For All

What is a vision center?

A vision centre is a small, permanent clinic designed to offer basic eye-care services to people living in semi-rural and rural areas. These centres are usually run by trained ophthalmic assistants, who handle routine eye-care needs. Patients with more complex conditions are directed to the main hospital for further treatment.

How Vision Centres Improve Eye Care Access

Research indicates that having permanent eye-care facilities in rural communities encourages residents to seek treatment earlier, helping them avoid preventable vision loss and remain productive. This shift toward timely care highlights how essential vision centres are. More than 90% of individuals who visit these centres receive complete treatment on site, while fewer than 10% require referral to the main hospital for procedures such as surgery or specialized tests. Vision centres have also significantly expanded access.
